1916 - 2026
Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener was a dominant figure in the British Army and one of the most recognisable faces of the First World War. A veteran of imperial campaigns in Sudan and South Africa, he became Secretary of State for War in 1914. Kitchener foresaw a long conflict and called for mass volunteer armies, symbolised by the iconic “Your Country Needs You” poster. His leadership shaped Britain’s early war mobilisation. In 1916, he died when HMS Hampshire struck a mine off Orkney on the 5th June 1916. This year marks the 110th anniversary of his death and enduring legacy.
