The Battle of the Imjin River (22–25 April 1951)

The Battle of Imjin River was one of the most intense actions fought by the British Army during the Korean War. The 29th British Independent Infantry Brigade — including the Gloucestershire Regiment, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, and Royal Ulster Rifles (with a Belgian battalion attached) — held a long, exposed front as large Chinese forces attacked toward Seoul.

For three days the brigade fought repeated night assaults, often at close range, carrying out stubborn defences and fighting withdrawals to slow the enemy. The stand of the Glosters on Hill 235 became legendary: surrounded, short of ammunition, and cut off, they fought on until ordered to break out, with many being killed or captured.

British losses were severe. Hundreds were killed and wounded, and many more — especially from the Glosters — were taken prisoner, making it one of the heaviest casualty battles for the British Army since the Second World War. Yet their sacrifice helped delay the Chinese advance and protected the wider UN line — a legacy remembered with great respect today.
